Cyberattack Disrupts French Supermarkets, Overheating Refrigeration and Spoiling Food

A widespread cyberattack has impacted hundreds of French supermarkets, including major chains such as Carrefour, Monoprix, Intermarché, and Coopérative U. The digital assault reportedly caused refrigerators and freezers to reach temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight, resulting in significant food spoilage and, in some instances, fires.

Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Coopérative U, confirmed that the attacks affected "refrigeration production facilities of several stores." He described the incident as "extremely serious and unprecedented," highlighting its impact on the preservation of fresh products and the French food supply.

The cyberattack's reach extended beyond France, with reports indicating similar incidents in Spain, Portugal, Poland, Germany, and Belgium. Felix Aime, a senior cyber threat intelligence analyst at Sekoia Threat Detection and Research, noted the multi-country impact. European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, condemned the attacks, stating that "the weaponization of food has become a reality."

The incident raises concerns about the cybersecurity of food retail infrastructure and its vulnerability to coordinated digital assaults. The potential for disruption to food supply chains and consumer access underscores the need for enhanced security measures.
