Cyberattack Disrupts Refrigeration Systems at 400 French Supermarkets

More than 400 supermarkets across France experienced significant disruption after a cyberattack targeted their refrigeration systems, forcing the disposal of vast quantities of perishable food. The incident affected major chains including Intermarché, Netto, Coopérative U, and Monoprix.

The attack compromised remote control systems managed by three separate companies supplying refrigeration units, according to France's National Cybersecurity Agency. Authorities in Paris have launched an investigation, though no group has yet claimed responsibility.

Dominique Schelcher, head of the Coopérative U grocery chain, characterized the event as "unprecedented" and "extremely serious," emphasizing the attack's impact on the nation's food supply. He indicated that the loss of refrigeration can cost a small supermarket tens of thousands of euros.

This incident highlights a concerning trend of cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure. Unlike typical data breaches, this attack directly impacted physical operations and food safety, raising concerns about the vulnerability of the food supply chain to digital interference.
