Cybersecurity startup Cathedral reports breach of Anthropic systems

Cybersecurity firm Cathedral says it successfully penetrated internal messaging and data systems at AI company Anthropic. The firm, which specializes in AI-driven military cybersecurity, reported achieving access in less than 12 hours by targeting vulnerabilities in third-party business software commonly used by enterprises. Anthropic confirmed that Cathedral gained access to a limited set of its systems but noted that the firm had spent several days attempting to breach its core software unsuccessfully before switching to external tools.

Anthropic stated that it has since disabled the access points exploited by Cathedral. The incident highlights potential security gaps in the software supply chain that could impact advanced organizations. Cathedral, which recently closed a $160 million funding round at a $1.4 billion valuation, is positioning itself to provide offensive and defensive cybersecurity tools to the Pentagon.

The breach occurs amidst a period of political friction between Anthropic and the Trump administration, which has previously labeled the company a supply-chain risk. Cathedral’s founders, who include former officials from the Department of Government Efficiency, are seeking to secure government contracts, though analysts suggest future political shifts could complicate these efforts.
