Cyclospora Outbreak May Be Hurting Foot Traffic at Salad Chains

A significant outbreak of the cyclospora parasite across the United States appears to be impacting customer traffic at several fast-casual restaurants, particularly those specializing in salads. Data from Placer.ai indicated a drop in foot traffic for chains like Chop't, Panera Bread, and Sweetgreen on Sunday, July 11, compared to their respective Sunday averages.

While none of these chains have been directly linked to the outbreak, which the CDC estimates may have sickened nearly 7,000 people, health officials in Michigan have identified lettuce or salad greens as a "potential source." Past cyclospora outbreaks have been associated with fresh produce. The outbreak has been most prominent in Michigan, though other areas like New York have also seen rising case numbers.

The market has reacted to the news, with Sweetgreen's stock experiencing a notable decline in recent days. Chop't and Panera Bread are privately held companies. In contrast, broader quick-service chains like McDonald's and Wendy's reportedly saw increased foot traffic, suggesting a potential shift away from salad-heavy menus.

Taco Bell, owned by Yum! Brands, has also been affected. Some locations faced recalls affecting lettuce and other fresh ingredients, with authorities investigating a potential link to the outbreak. However, some customers remain unaware of the health concerns, continuing their dining habits as usual.
