D-Propulse develops rotating detonation engines to challenge aerospace import reliance

Founded in 2025 by defense analyst Saurav Jha and former DRDO scientist V. Ramanujachari, D-Propulse is developing rotating detonation engines (RDEs). The technology utilizes supersonic detonation waves to generate thrust, potentially offering higher fuel efficiency and simpler mechanics compared to traditional jet engines. The company intends to offer these propulsion systems for high-speed missiles and autonomous aerial vehicles.

In July 2026, the startup completed five ground tests of a 5 kN air-breathing RDE at a facility in Hyderabad. The company claims the engine is 15-25% more thermally efficient than standard jet engines and potentially 60% cheaper to produce than conventional ramjets, though these projections remain untested in commercial-scale manufacturing environments.

D-Propulse enters a sector occupied by major aerospace entities like GE Aerospace and Lockheed Martin, both of which are pursuing similar propulsion innovations. The startup has yet to generate revenue or secure defense contracts. Moving forward, the firm plans to establish a testing facility at IIT Madras, seek a Series A funding round, and target initial flight testing by late 2027, with the objective of reaching limited production by the end of 2028.
