DALY BMS Clarifies Balancing Current Selection for Battery Packs

DALY BMS is providing guidance on selecting the appropriate balancing current for battery packs, differentiating between 100mA and 1A ratings. The choice depends on pack behavior and available time, not just the higher rating.

DALY BMS, a manufacturer of Battery Management Systems (BMS), has issued guidance to assist customers in choosing the correct balancing current for their LiFePO4 battery packs. The advisory emphasizes that a higher balancing current rating, such as 1A compared to 100mA, does not automatically guarantee faster balancing or represent the universally superior choice.

The company explains that balancing current refers to the BMS's capacity to move current between battery cells when balancing conditions are met. While a 1A rating is ten times higher than 100mA, the actual time taken for balancing depends on multiple factors. These include the activation and control conditions of the balancing process, the battery's operating state, and the time available for balancing. A simplified calculation, illustrating that correcting a 1Ah difference might take 10 hours at 100mA versus 1 hour at 1A, serves only as an illustration and does not predict real-world balancing duration.

DALY BMS highlights that the chosen BMS's balancing architecture also plays a crucial role. Their A-series utilizes passive balancing with a 100mA capability, while the T-series employs flyback active balancing at 1A. Therefore, simply comparing current ratings without considering the method is insufficient. The type of balancing employed is a significant factor.

The manufacturer urges customers to assess the actual requirements based on the battery pack's observed behavior. If a specific cell consistently deviates, if balancing time is limited, or if there are underlying cell issues, a higher balancing current may be warranted. Conversely, selecting a higher rating without a demonstrated need is not advised. DALY BMS requests specific details from customers, such as battery chemistry, cell count, and performance data, to provide tailored recommendations.
