DALY BMS, a provider of battery management systems, has detailed the NMEA 2000 protocol, a standard that has become central to marine electronics communication. This protocol allows various electronic devices on a boat, from navigation displays to engine data and battery status, to communicate seamlessly over a single network.

The NMEA 2000 standard, developed by the National Marine Electronics Association, builds upon Controller Area Network (CAN) bus technology. Unlike the older NMEA 0183 standard, which used point-to-point connections and was susceptible to single-point failures, NMEA 2000 operates as a distributed network. This design ensures that the failure of one device does not disrupt communication for the rest of the network.

Data exchange within the NMEA 2000 network is managed through Parameter Group Numbers (PGNs), which define specific message types such as GPS position, engine RPM, or battery status. Operating at 250 kbit/s, the CAN bus facilitates efficient and reliable data transfer in a binary format. This open standard ensures interoperability between devices from different manufacturers.

As marine electronics evolve, battery systems are increasingly integrating with NMEA 2000. Specific PGNs, including PGN 127508 for Battery Status and PGN 127506 for DC Detailed Status, transmit critical battery information like voltage, current, temperature, state of charge, and remaining runtime. Standardized alert messages (PGN 126983) also ensure that any system warnings are clearly communicated to the vessel's helm.
