Dangbei: White Wall Can Substitute for Projector Screen Under Right Conditions

Consumer electronics company Dangbei has provided guidance on using projectors without a traditional screen. According to the company, a projector can produce a satisfactory image by reflecting it directly onto a flat, white wall, presenting a cost-effective option for home theater setups.

The key factors influencing image quality are the projector's brightness (lumens), the wall's color and paint finish, and the room's lighting conditions. Dangbei emphasizes that a matte white wall reflects light evenly, avoiding glare or hotspots often associated with glossy surfaces.

Brightness is crucial, especially in well-lit rooms. For bright environments, Dangbei recommends projectors with at least 3000 lumens, while 1500–2000 lumens may suffice in darker settings. Projector resolution also matters for larger projected images, as details can appear less sharp on a wall compared to a specialized screen.

While wall projection is feasible and often adequate, Dangbei acknowledges that dedicated projector screens offer superior performance in contrast, color accuracy, and brightness uniformity. Specialized screens, such as Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) types, can also more effectively mitigate ambient light interference.

Dangbei offers tips for optimizing wall projection, including using matte white paint, controlling room lighting, ensuring sufficient lumens, setting the correct throw distance, and utilizing higher resolution for larger projected areas.
