Edinburgh-based Danu Robotics has spent six years developing a robot designed to significantly improve the sorting of recyclable materials. Company founder Amy Ma identified the problem while working as a software developer in London's finance sector, noticing that the building's recycling bins were emptied into the trash.

"Even though they have lots of money, all these different recycling bins end up in the same place," Ma told TechCrunch. As she delved deeper into the issue, she realized it wasn't just her workplace. The economics of recycling often rely on manual sorting by humans to separate different recyclable materials.

"I saw the technology and thought, we can do much better," Ma recalls. She is now fulfilling that promise with Danu Robotics. The company is bringing to market a robotic solution engineered to sort recyclables more cost-effectively and rapidly than traditional methods.

Danu Robotics intends to revolutionize the recycling industry by introducing advanced robotics and AI into a sector historically characterized by labor-intensive and inefficient processes. The company believes its technology can increase recycling rates and reduce waste management costs.
