Das Sichere Haus Publishes Spring Gardening Safety Guide
The German safety organization DSH – Aktion Das Sichere Haus has released new guidance for safe spring gardening. The advice aims to help gardeners identify risks and prevent accidents.

Berlin – The German safety organization DSH – Aktion Das Sichere Haus has published updated guidelines for ensuring safety during spring gardening activities. The initiative aims to assist gardening enthusiasts in recognizing common accident risks and starting the gardening season securely. The organization highlights that while gardening can be therapeutic, it also presents significant risks if safety precautions are not observed.
According to the organization, citing data from the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA), approximately 200,000 people in Germany suffer injuries related to gardening each year. The first warm days of spring often prompt gardeners outdoors, but various hazards, such as debris on pathways, sharp tools, and improper working postures, can lead to accidents. Das Sichere Haus advises delaying major clean-up tasks until the risk of late frosts has passed, typically between mid-March and early April.
Key recommendations for safe gardening include preparing paths and surfaces to eliminate trip hazards, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and handling garden tools safely. It is recommended to wear gloves to prevent cuts and punctures, safety glasses when operating machinery, and sturdy, non-slip footwear. Emphasis is also placed on ergonomics and taking regular breaks to avoid overexertion of the back, shoulders, and knees.
Particular attention is given to establishing safety zones to keep children and pets away from active work areas where tools are in use. All tools should be switched off, disconnected from power sources, and stored securely after use. The organization provides further details on its website and encourages users to consult these resources before commencing their gardening tasks.
