Dashixia Dam Connects to Power Grid, Begins Electricity Generation

The first two generator units at the Dashixia Water Control Project in China's Tianshan Mountains were connected to the power grid and began generating electricity on September 29. The 247-meter-high concrete-faced sand-gravel dam is the world's highest of its kind. Invested in and constructed by China Energy Engineering Group, the project marks a significant step in meeting regional energy demands and managing water resources.

Upon completion, the project is expected to supply electricity to approximately 600,000 households. It will also deliver 3.42 billion cubic meters of ecological water annually to the Tarim River, significantly improving downstream flood control from a once-in-10-year standard to a once-in-50-year standard. Additionally, the dam will ensure irrigation for over 453,333 hectares of farmland.

A documentary series has also been released, focusing on the young builders of the project. The series highlights the contributions of engineers born in the 1990s and 2000s who have worked at the remote site since 2019. The first episode details the challenges faced by young engineer Bai Lin and his team, including solving complex issues like concrete pouring on a 360-meter slope, to contribute to the construction of this notable dam.
