Data Center Proposal Sparks Opposition in Pennsylvania Town

NorthPoint Development has offered a $10,000 payment to each of the 4,500 households in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania, in exchange for approval to build a data center. The total payout amounts to $45 million and is part of a larger 15-building project planned for 1,300 acres in the Pocono foothills.

The developer also plans to invest $120 million in community initiatives over 15 years. Letters sent to residents suggested the funds could be used for "really whatever you want."

However, many locals are resistant. Residents like retired teacher Jeff Fasnacht are concerned the data center will significantly decrease their property values. Others cite worries about construction noise, a lack of transparency, and view the cash offer as a bribe, despite the town's median household income being around $60,000.

The project faces an uncertain future. The township rejected the proposal on zoning grounds, leading NorthPoint Development to file a lawsuit. A temporary moratorium on data center construction is currently in place.
