Data centers have become the primary driver of escalating electricity demand, placing significant strain on US power grids. This surge, particularly from the AI data center boom, is now accelerating investment in a new technology: solid-state power transformers that leverage modern power electronics.

Existing power grids rely on conventional transformer technology, with designs dating back to the 1880s, which are painstakingly assembled by hand. These devices use copper wire coils wound around a steel core to adjust voltage levels for long-distance transmission or for use by homes and businesses.

The largest conventional transformers are not mass-produced but custom-built for specific utility substations. Manufacturing constraints, coupled with the urgent need to upgrade US power infrastructure, mean that utility companies and other customers face delivery wait times of several years for new transformers.

This delay hampers efforts to expand grid capacity to meet growing electricity demand and also slows the replacement of aging transformer units. The new solid-state technology offers a potential solution by enabling smaller, more efficient, and faster-to-manufacture transformers, potentially alleviating these infrastructure challenges.
