DataM: China and Hong Kong Drive Japanese Sake Export Growth
Global Japanese sake market projected to reach $1.89 billion by 2033, with significant growth fueled by demand from China and Hong Kong. Exports hit a record ¥47.5 billion.

The global market for Japanese sake is projected to reach US$1.89 billion by 2033, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 4.1%, according to DataM Intelligence. The market's growth is primarily driven by surging premium export volumes to mainland China and Hong Kong.
Japanese sake exports reached a record high of ¥47.5 billion, marking a significant increase over the past decade. Total export volume hit 35,895 kiloliters. Mainland China is the largest importer by volume, focusing on ultra-premium labels for corporate gifting and fine dining. Hong Kong leads in per capita consumption outside Japan and serves as a gateway for high-value collections.
Analysts note that the average international export value per liter consistently exceeds 1,109 yen, indicating a global shift towards premiumization.
The market's expansion is not uniform across all product types. Demand for premium grades like Junmai-shu, Ginjo-shu, and Junmai Daiginjo has steepened. In response to declining domestic consumption, breweries are introducing new low-alcohol and sparkling sake variants, as well as fruit-infused options to appeal to younger consumers.
Distribution channels are evolving with digitalization and increased integration in the HoReCa sector. In addition to traditional restaurant clients, direct-to-consumer online sales, corporate subscription networks, and specialized platforms are boosting transaction volumes. Advanced, temperature-controlled logistics ensure product quality during long-distance shipping.
