Dating App Scammers Use AI-Generated Voices, Researchers Find
Security researchers have identified a new wave of dating app scams utilizing AI-generated voices to trick users. A fraudulent app named Dora was found to impersonate individuals with synthesized audio.
Scammers are now employing artificial intelligence to create sophisticated dating app fraud schemes, according to a recent analysis by security researcher Matthew Gore-Kormanik.
While investigating a fraudulent dating application identified as Dora, Gore-Kormanik encountered a simulated incoming call from a person named Jennifer. The profile described Jennifer as a 41-year-old Sagittarius with specific physical attributes and stated interests. However, upon answering the video call, Gore-Kormanik observed only a moving tapestry and heard distorted background noise, with no visual representation of Jennifer.
Following the unsuccessful call, the scammer, posing as Jennifer, sent a message commenting positively on the interaction and Gore-Kormanik's voice. This suggests the AI was not only used to generate the voice but also to craft conversational responses.
The discovery highlights a growing trend where AI technology is being weaponized for fraudulent purposes, moving beyond simple text-based scams to more immersive audio-based impersonations. The incident raises concerns about the increasing sophistication of online scams and the potential for AI to be used in malicious ways.
