DBU addresses ethical animal husbandry and global food security

The German Federal Foundation for the Environment (DBU) has focused on the multi-faceted challenges within global food systems through a series of lectures. In February 2017, Andreas Brinker, a specialist from the Catholic LandvolkHochschule Oesede, examined the ethical tensions inherent in livestock farming, specifically analyzing the differing expectations of farmers, consumers, and animal welfare advocates.

Later in August 2017, the discourse shifted to global food security. Dr. Dieter Wenderlein presented a report on the humanitarian situation in Kenya, where persistent drought has led to severe food shortages. His presentation highlighted the efforts of the Sant’Egidio community in delivering essential food aid and medical support. The lecture included a panel discussion with DBU representatives to explore the underlying causes of these developments.

These events were hosted in conjunction with the foundation’s exhibition, “ÜberLebensmittel.” The sessions aimed to facilitate critical dialogue between industry experts and the public regarding the economic, ecological, and ethical aspects of food production.
