DBU Foundation Capital Reaches Three Billion Euros for First Time

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) has achieved a significant financial milestone, reaching a foundation capital of three billion euros for the first time since its founding over 30 years ago. The foundation announced this development at its annual press conference in June, highlighting its sustained capacity to support environmental initiatives.

Established in 1990 with an initial capital equivalent to 1.3 billion euros, the DBU has consistently grown its assets. DBU Secretary-General Alexander Bonde noted that approximately 2.2 billion euros have been disbursed to over 11,500 innovative environmental projects during this period, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups.

In addition to capital growth, the DBU has also increased its funding disbursements. Last year, the foundation allocated 57.6 million euros, an increase from the previous year's 52.9 million euros. Looking ahead to 2026, the DBU anticipates further growth in its funding volume, aiming for 60 to 70 million euros annually. This is partly due to a 400 million euro endowment from the federal government for a new "Marine Conservation Fund" program.

The foundation's financial management has also yielded strong returns. Assets under management generated approximately 129 million euros last year, up from around 106 million euros the prior year, benefiting from increased capital and positive stock market performance. DBU Finance Director Michael Dittrich stated that maintaining the real, inflation-adjusted value of the foundation's capital is a key objective, a goal that has been met. The foundation remains committed to supporting Germany's GreenTech sector and advancing environmental protection through economically viable innovations.
