DBU funds 100th startup, di.monta uses AI for efficient recycling

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) has welcomed its 100th startup, di.monta from Aachen, into its Green Startup funding initiative.

The company is developing solutions that utilize artificial intelligence and robotics for the efficient disassembly of electrical appliances, such as washing machines and electric vehicle batteries. The goal is to promote the reuse of components and accelerate recycling, thereby fostering a circular economy. di.monta aims to provide manufacturers with an economically viable, efficient, and automated method for repurposing and recycling old appliances.

Di.monta's technology involves software that analyzes disassembly processes performed by experts and learns incrementally. This enables a robot to carry out disassembly autonomously, swiftly, and safely. The company states that this allows for the reuse of components, like weights in washing machines, or the efficient recycling of other parts. Precise disassembly of components containing valuable metals, such as microchips and cables, facilitates accurate and energy-efficient recycling, speeding up the return of raw materials to the economy.

The company's solutions also aim to reduce risks associated with dismantling hazardous components, such as EV batteries, through automation. di.monta sees this as a significant opportunity to enhance energy independence, as critical components for the energy transition can be preserved for new applications within national or European circular economy frameworks.

The DBU's Green Startup program, launched in 2019, supports young companies developing environmentally beneficial, innovative, and economically sustainable business models. The program provides both financial and advisory support, enabling founders to dedicate themselves full-time to developing their startups.
