DBU targets education as primary tool for reducing food waste

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) has identified the education sector as a critical leverage point in the global effort to reduce food waste. With approximately one-third of all food produced globally going to waste—resulting in 10.9 million tons annually in Germany alone—the foundation emphasizes that the environmental impact on climate, water, and energy is substantial.

Verena Exner, head of department at DBU, argues that institutional kitchens and educational centers serve as key multipliers for sustainable behavior. By providing professional training for catering staff and incorporating food value awareness into curricula for children and students, the foundation aims to instill long-term habits that extend into private households.

DBU-backed initiatives include the "Mittel zum Leben" project, which engages 44 rural educational centers to professionalize sustainability management across their supply chains. The initiative connects producers, facility managers, and consumers to optimize food use and reduce loss. Furthermore, the foundation supports cross-border programs, such as nutrition and food-waste education in Hungarian primary schools.

These efforts underscore a strategic focus on combining vocational training with public awareness to standardize waste-reduction strategies.
