DBU to Host Seminar on Climate Change Impacts on World Heritage Sites

The Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) is organizing a seminar titled "World Heritage in Climate Change. Jointly Implementing Climate Adaptation" on June 18-19, 2026, at the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin. The primary goal is to jointly assess the current status and urgent needs for protecting Germany's World Heritage sites from the consequences of climate change.

The seminar aligns with Germany's Federal Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change (DAS 2024). It will gather stakeholders, including representatives from the 55 German World Heritage sites and eight geoparks. Experts from relevant professional associations, research institutions, and federal and state ministries will also participate.

Building on this assessment, concrete measures and implementation steps are intended to be defined to achieve protection goals. This event follows up on a previous meeting held in December 2025 titled "Preserving Heritage, Securing the Future – New Paths for Climate Adaptation."

The seminar is conducted in cooperation with the DBU, the Rathgen-Research Laboratory of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz), and is coordinated by the Federal Ministry for the Environment.
