DeepMind AI Predicts Hurricanes With Increased Accuracy

An artificial intelligence model developed by Google's DeepMind and Google Research has demonstrated a significant ability to predict tropical cyclones with remarkable accuracy, surprising weather scientists.

In the case of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, the WeatherNext AI predicted with 80 percent confidence five days before landfall that the storm system would intensify and hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane.

Published in Nature, the research indicates that WeatherNext provides an average of one day's extra lead time compared to existing models. Its three-day forecasts are as accurate as previous models' two-day forecasts, a crucial difference for communities preparing for severe weather events.

The model's accurate prediction of Hurricane Melissa's path and intensity allowed for earlier warnings to be issued to communities in Jamaica, giving residents and authorities more time to prepare and evacuate, potentially mitigating damage and loss of life.
