DeepMind Alum Simon Kohl Launches AI Lab for Drug Discovery

Simon Kohl, a former researcher at Google's AI unit DeepMind, has launched a new venture, Latent Labs, dedicated to using artificial intelligence for drug design and discovery. The company aims to accelerate the process of finding new medicines.

Kohl left DeepMind three years ago, establishing Latent Labs in 2020. He stated that the best environment for pushing technological boundaries is outside of large tech companies. "Pushing the frontier is best done outside," Kohl remarked, contrasting this with the broad, general AI research conducted at places like DeepMind.

Latent Labs is focusing specifically on the pharmaceutical sector, where AI has significant potential to streamline the lengthy and expensive drug development pipeline. The company develops tools capable of screening vast numbers of chemical compounds to identify potential drug candidates.

Last year, Latent Labs secured $1.7 million in seed funding, led by Project A Ventures. Kohl believes AI's role in medicine will continue to expand, and his company is positioned to capitalize on this trend by building scalable solutions for the industry.

Kohl elaborated that the company is building tools to screen billions of chemical compounds and predict their potential as therapeutics. He stressed the importance of effectively building and scaling these solutions to meet the growing demands within the pharmaceutical research and development space.
