Defense Tech Veteran Warns of 'Tourists and FOMO' in Sector

Ali Espahbodi, a seasoned figure with 25 years in the aerospace and defense sectors, is sounding an alarm about the influx of software-focused investors and tech alumni, particularly from companies like SpaceX, into the hard-tech and industrial technology space.

Espahbodi, who co-founded the accelerator Starburst Aerospace and now leads Generational Partners, describes the current trend as driven by "tourists and FOMO" (fear of missing out). He argues that many investors successful in software are now aggressively pursuing hardware-centric industries such as manufacturing and energy without a full grasp of the capital intensity and operational complexities involved.

Generational Partners, which began investing in January 2023 and has backed 14 companies, focuses on businesses that merge creative software talent with commoditized hardware and novel business models. Espahbodi highlights Vital Lyfe, a company developing water desalination devices using a mass-production approach similar to SpaceX's Starlink terminals, as an example.

While acknowledging that AI has significantly accelerated hardware commercialization and performance improvements, Espahbodi insists it's not a substitute for deep industry knowledge. He stresses that true innovation often lies in reimagining business models and achieving efficient scaling, requiring a more profound understanding of industrial sectors than solely software expertise.
