Del Mar Thoroughbred Club CEO Joe Harper to Retire After Nearly Five Decades

Joe Harper, 83, Chief Executive Officer of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (DMTC), will transition from his day-to-day role at the close of 2026. Harper, who joined Del Mar in 1977, will continue to serve on the DMTC board as CEO Emeritus.

Harper's nearly five-decade tenure has significantly shaped California racing. During his leadership, Del Mar oversaw the demolition and reconstruction of its grandstand in the early 1990s and introduced the Grade I Pacific Classic in 1991. Under his direction, Del Mar has become a premier racing venue, hosting the Breeders' Cup World Championships multiple times since its debut in 2017.

Josh Rubinstein, currently President of Del Mar, has been selected to succeed Harper as CEO, effective January 1, 2027. Rubinstein has held various executive roles at Del Mar since 2018 and is recognized for his contributions to the track's success.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, established in 1937, is known for its coastal location and high-caliber racing events, attracting top horses, trainers, and jockeys.
