Delhi High Court Orders Meta to Remove AI-Generated Deepfakes

The Delhi High Court has issued a directive to Meta Platforms Inc. to promptly remove AI-generated, explicit deepfake images that allegedly depict a woman alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court's order also includes provisions for police protection for the unnamed woman featured in the controversial material.

The legal proceedings stemmed from an urgent criminal writ petition accusing activists of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) of morphing images and creating AI-generated content. The petition stated that the woman sought the removal of these images from various online platforms, including social media and pornographic websites.

Justice Girish Kathpalia emphasized the sensitivity of the case, noting its implication for the Prime Minister. The court stressed the need for careful handling of the matter to prevent further dissemination of the content.

In addition to the takedown order, the court directed the investigating agency to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the provided images and videos. The Delhi Police have been instructed to submit a status report within one week detailing the actions taken.
