Delhi Police Asks Ride-Hailing and Delivery Apps to Limit Services in Central District

Delhi Police has advised app-based ride-hailing and delivery platforms to regulate their services in and around the central Delhi area, citing ongoing student protests. The police issued prohibitory orders earlier this week, restricting gatherings in New Delhi District, except for the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar Road.

The advisory urges platforms offering mobility, food delivery, quick commerce, and other e-commerce services to manage their operations within the notified zone for the duration of the prohibitory orders. Potential measures include temporary geo-fencing of affected locations or suspending services to and from the restricted area, where operationally feasible.

Authorities stated that these steps are intended to reduce movement into the notified area while ensuring the safety of drivers, riders, delivery partners, and the public. While not mandating a complete service shutdown, the advisory strongly encourages platforms to limit operations in restricting zones as long as the prohibitory orders remain active.

The measures coincide with heightened security in the capital due to ongoing student-led demonstrations and the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. The situation has also drawn attention following claims by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey that the Indian government had ordered the takedown of a decentralised messaging app he launched, alleging attempts to curb its use amid the protests.
