Delta Organizes Session on AI-Driven Coral Restoration at ICRS
Taiwanese company Delta Electronics became the first from its country to organize a dedicated session at the International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS), focusing on AI's role in marine ecosystem restoration.

Delta Electronics, a Taiwanese technology firm, has become the first company from Taiwan to organize a dedicated session at the 16th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) held in New Zealand. The conference, gathering over 2,000 experts from 93 countries every four years, featured Delta's session focused on how artificial intelligence (AI) and cross-sector collaboration can enhance coral reef restoration and ecosystem resilience.
The session, titled "Driving Technology Innovation through Cross-sectoral Partnerships for Coral Reef Resilience and Restoration," brought together experts from academia, government, NGOs, and industry. Presentations highlighted innovations such as AI-powered image recognition, digital twins, and the use of biocompatible titanium materials inspired by regenerative medicine for coral sampling.
Delta has a long-standing commitment to coral restoration, collaborating with research institutions in the United States, Australia, and Singapore. The company is advancing applications like Large Area Imaging (LAI), AI-based coral identification, and digital twins for monitoring and mapping coral reefs.
Wim Chang, CEO of the Delta Electronics Foundation, emphasized the need for multi-disciplinary approaches to address climate change impacts on coral reefs. "We are honored to contribute by serving as symposium organizers, reviewers and session chairs," Chang stated. The goal is to drive technological innovation and develop AI tools for identifying optimal restoration sites.
Professor Chang-Feng Dai, a leading Taiwanese coral reef scientist and the session's chair, underscored that no single technology or discipline can tackle these challenges alone. "Cross-sector collaboration is essential," Dai remarked, noting that 21 researchers were selected to present solutions to the ongoing fourth global coral bleaching event.
