Denmark Launches Emergency Measures to Curb AI Cheating in Schools

The Danish government has rolled out an emergency plan to address the rising issue of students using artificial intelligence (AI) for cheating. This initiative follows reports from several Danish high schools of a significant increase in AI-related academic dishonesty during the summer examination period, posing new challenges to traditional education and assessment systems.

The new measures aim to curb the use of AI for completing assignments and cheating on exams. As part of the plan, approximately 9,000 students annually will undergo oral defenses in addition to their regular written assignments. The government also advocates for monitoring student computer screens during written tests and implementing network filtering to restrict access to unauthorized content. Furthermore, students are encouraged to complete written assignments within controlled environments at school.

While the misuse of AI presents challenges for educational institutions, there is a consensus among schools, students, and parents that AI should not be outright banned. Instead, the focus is on finding ways to utilize AI more reasonably and constructively.

Denmark is not alone in tackling this issue. Earlier this year, Australian universities began adapting their examination and assessment methods, including reintroducing oral exams and in-person tests to maintain academic integrity. Seoul, South Korea, also issued a notice in June prohibiting the use of AI smart glasses during final exams for students in its primary and secondary schools.
