Dental care represents an overlooked expense in retirement planning

Dental care remains a frequently overlooked component of retirement budgeting. Because Medicare does not cover routine dental procedures, retirees face significant out-of-pocket exposure as their dental health needs typically increase with age.

Morningstar analyst Christine Benz notes that standalone dental insurance often provides limited value due to low annual coverage caps and waiting periods for major procedures. When weighing monthly premiums against these caps, many retirees may find that insurance provides minimal economic protection.

Medicare Advantage plans often bundle dental, vision, and hearing coverage; however, analysts caution against using these perks as the primary driver for healthcare decisions. Restricted provider networks and potential limitations on specialist access can complicate care management for those who rely solely on these plans.

For those with sufficient financial resources, self-funding dental care is often presented as a viable alternative. By utilizing tax-advantaged Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and negotiating pricing directly with providers, retirees can maintain control over their choice of care without the constraints of insurance premiums or restrictive provider networks.
