Deutsche Bahn and Deutsche Telekom to upgrade mobile network on trains

Mobile network coverage along German railway lines is set to significantly improve following an agreement between Deutsche Bahn and Deutsche Telekom.

The companies will invest hundreds of millions of euros to ensure passengers can make calls and use the internet without interruption on all long-distance and regional rail services. The aim is to eliminate all coverage gaps by the end of 2026.

Deutsche Telekom will build out and expand its mobile network along Deutsche Bahn's railway lines. The company plans to put around 800 new cell sites into operation and expand capacity at hundreds of existing locations.

Major routes, used by all ICE and most IC trains, will see data transfer speeds exceeding 200 Mbit/s by the end of 2024. Other heavily frequented routes will achieve this speed by the end of 2025, with remaining lines receiving over 100 Mbit/s by the end of 2026. Some regional routes will experience mobile network coverage for the first time.
