Deutsche Bahn Extends and Delays Major Infrastructure Overhaul Until 2036

Deutsche Bahn's plans for renovating its railway network have been extended and delayed. The company now aims to overhaul more than 40 key line sections by 2036, at least five years longer than initially planned. These extensive renovation works will lead to months-long closures and significant timetable changes for train passengers on various routes.

The crucial Hamburg-Berlin train line will be completely closed from August 1, 2025, to June 13, 2026, due to the ongoing overhaul. During this period, extensive work will be carried out on tracks, switches, and overhead lines. The direct connection will be suspended, and remaining trains will operate on alternative routes, increasing travel time by approximately 45 minutes. Bus replacements will be deployed for certain local services.

Train connections between cities such as Hamburg, Schwerin, and Rostock will also be significantly affected during the same renovation period. The number of IC train services will be reduced and routes altered, extending travel times by about an hour. The Nuremberg-Regensburg route will also experience limitations from February to July 2026, with some trains being rerouted.

The purpose of these renovation efforts is to improve the reliability and capacity of the railway network in the long term. Deutsche Bahn is providing passengers with information on all timetable changes and disruptions via its website. Travelers are advised to check their ticket details before their journey.
