Deutsche Bank: Interoperability Key to Next-Generation Always-On Payments

FRANKFURT – Deutsche Bank is emphasizing interoperability as a defining theme for the future of payments, particularly across the Asia Pacific (APAC) and Middle East & Africa (MEA) regions. The bank is working towards an architecture that connects domestic instant payment systems, blockchain technologies, tokenized deposits, and traditional clearing infrastructure into a continuous 24/7 environment.

Corporate clients increasingly expect consumer-style speed and clarity in payments, irrespective of the underlying technology. Rachel Whelan, Deutsche Bank's APAC & MEA Head of Corporate Cash Management, stated that the challenge is no longer just expanding instant payments within countries, but connecting these domestic networks with international banking infrastructure.

Deutsche Bank is developing a 24/7 capability across its global interbranch network. The bank is advancing digital payment infrastructure through initiatives including the Partior network, Project Agorá, and collaboration with MAS-Bundesbank. Artificial intelligence is expected to enhance transaction routing efficiency, while tokenized deposits could improve real-time funding and liquidity mobility.

The bank's objective is to make payment infrastructure increasingly invisible to clients, while securely integrating regulated banking functions and emerging digital technologies at scale. This necessitates seamless cooperation between traditional payment rails, instant payment systems, tokenized deposits, and new digital asset ecosystems.
