Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt initiates programs to reduce food waste

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) is shifting its educational focus toward the reduction of food waste as of October 2026. A network of 44 educational institutions has been engaged to implement strategies aimed at minimizing food loss and fostering sustainable consumption habits.

The foundation is supporting a bilateral German-Czech project focused on reducing food waste, while simultaneously running an educational initiative in Hungarian primary schools. These programs prioritize identifying regulatory and structural barriers that currently hinder food recovery efforts.

By targeting the supply chain and educational sectors, the DBU aims to reduce losses that occur before food reaches the final consumer. The initiative reflects a broader push to integrate resource efficiency into European educational curricula.
