Deutsche Post plans record postal rate increase for 2027
Standard letter and postcard rates in Germany are set to rise to 1.15 euros starting in 2027, according to Deutsche Post.

Deutsche Post has announced plans to implement a significant increase in postal rates beginning in early 2027. The proposed rate for standard letters and postcards is 1.15 euros, marking a 20-cent increase from current prices. Adjustments are also planned for other mailing categories, including large and oversized envelopes.
The proposed rate changes require approval from the Bundesnetzagentur, Germany’s federal network agency. The agency recently authorized potential postage increases for private customers, averaging roughly 20 percent. If approved, the new pricing structure is expected to remain in effect for two years.
The company attributes the decision to declining mail volumes and rising operational costs. As digital communication continues to replace physical mail, volumes have dropped from 16.9 billion pieces in 2005 to under 9.4 billion by 2025. Despite this decline, the operator must continue to fund a nationwide infrastructure of post offices and collection boxes, alongside annual investments in automated systems and electric vehicle fleets.
Deutsche Post noted that German postage remains below the European average of 1.52 euros for a standard letter. The hike aims to ensure the financial viability of providing universal postal services across the country.
