Deutsche Telekom accelerates fiber optic network rollout in Germany

Deutsche Telekom announced it is significantly accelerating the rollout of its fiber optic network across Germany. The company plans to bring high-speed, reliable gigabit connections to more homes and businesses by leveraging artificial intelligence and adopting new, more efficient installation techniques.

Fiber optic technology is crucial for Germany's digitalization. With data traffic continuously increasing due to more complex and data-intensive applications, the demand for fiber connections is growing. Telekom consistently invests in broadband technologies; its fiber optic network in Germany already spans over 750,000 kilometers. The stated goal is to offer FTTH (Fiber to the home) connections to all 41.5 million households in Germany by 2030.

The company is focusing on streamlining construction through close collaboration with municipalities and utilizing AI for tasks like optimizing land surveying. Alongside traditional trenching methods, Telekom is exploring more efficient and cost-effective techniques, such as minimally invasive milling and aerial cable deployment using existing utility poles. However, adopting these new methods often requires overcoming bureaucratic hurdles and lengthy approval processes.

Currently, over 8.4 million households in Germany can access Telekom's FTTH network, with a target of reaching 10 million by 2024. The company also offers FTTB (Fiber to the building) and FTTC (Fiber to the curb) solutions, which deliver fiber connectivity to the building or a distribution cabinet on the street.
