Deutsche Telekom Achieves 65% Energy Savings in 5G Core Network
Deutsche Telekom has reported energy savings of up to 65 percent in its 5G core network through an innovative demand-driven resource management approach. The strategy optimizes both software and hardware layers for reduced power consumption.
Deutsche Telekom announced significant energy savings, reaching up to 65 percent in its mobile core network. This achievement stems from an innovative approach that employs demand-driven control of network resources and hardware optimization.
The company collaborated with technology partners, including Lenovo for server hardware, HPE for network components, AMD for processors, and Mavenir for 5G software features, to develop this energy efficiency concept across all network layers.
Initial tests in the live network have been completed successfully, with further rollout planned. Future enhancements involve the implementation of AI-based algorithms to predict network traffic and proactively manage resource allocation, ensuring components are utilized only when necessary. Deutsche Telekom intends to share more details at Mobile World Congress 2026.
The approach, termed "Full Stack Energy Efficiency," encompasses the entire technology stack, from hardware to software and services. The newly developed "Horizontal Telco Cloud" architecture facilitates these optimizations by providing a standardized platform. The core principle is "Zero Bits, Zero Watts," aiming to minimize energy use when no data is being transmitted.
