Deutsche Telekom Achieves Climate Neutrality in Own Operations

Frankfurt, Germany – Deutsche Telekom announced it has reached climate neutrality for its group-wide operations, covering Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (purchased energy) emissions. The company marks itself as the first firm within Germany's DAX 40 index to achieve this internally managed operational target.

The company reports a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions exceeding 94 percent compared to 2017 levels. The total reduction amounts to approximately 28 million tons of carbon dioxide. Telekom states it has implemented its planned decarbonization measures globally and on schedule.

Key strategies employed include a full transition to green electricity through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), significant investments in energy efficiency such as smart grid controls and modern technology, and the electrification of its vehicle fleet along with building modernizations. These efforts have reduced operational costs and carbon footprint.

The remaining emission share, just under six percent, is offset through high-quality carbon sequestration projects. Deutsche Telekom asserts that climate protection and economic success are not mutually exclusive, but rather mutually reinforcing when implemented effectively. The company plans further ambitious climate goals, aiming for a 55 percent reduction across all three scopes by 2030 and net-zero emissions across the entire value chain by 2040.
