Deutsche Telekom Achieves Significant Energy Savings in 5G Core Network
Deutsche Telekom has implemented a new approach to network energy efficiency, achieving up to 65 percent savings in its mobile 5G core network. This advancement is based on demand-driven resource management and collaboration with technology partners who have helped optimize both software and hardware layers.
The company has developed the "Full Stack Energy Efficiency" concept, which encompasses the entire network's technology stack, from services to processors and servers. The concept aims to dynamically minimize energy consumption according to network usage. The goal is for components to operate only when needed, adhering to the "Zero Bits, Zero Watts" principle.
Partners in the initiative include Lenovo, HPE, AMD, and Mavenir, who have supplied optimized server hardware, energy-efficient network components, processors, and 5G software. These solutions enable dynamic allocation of network resources and improved energy efficiency across all levels.
Deutsche Telekom plans to present its solution more extensively at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The company is also developing AI-based algorithms to predict network traffic and enable proactive powering down of components when they are not in use. This comprehensive approach lays the groundwork for enhanced energy efficiency within the industry.
Deutsche Telekom previously announced achieving full carbon neutrality in its own operations. The new energy-saving concept is part of the company's strategy to make its networks even more efficient and environmentally friendly while maintaining service quality.
