Deutsche Telekom and Finnish software specialist Unikie have developed and demonstrated an automated system for loading and unloading vehicles onto rail cars. The new technology was successfully tested at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany.
This successful demonstration represents a significant step toward the complete automation of vehicle logistics. Maneuvering vehicles onto trains, especially in confined spaces, requires a high degree of precision. Deutsche Telekom provides the necessary digital infrastructure, including 5G connectivity and edge computing solutions, to connect vehicles with control systems.
The project, part of the broader AutoLog research initiative, aims to automate vehicle movements under real-world operating conditions. Similar processes have previously been automated at Volkswagen's port in Emden. Rail transport is a crucial part of vehicle logistics in Europe, and automation can reduce manual labor and increase efficiency.
Unikie's Marshalling Solution system enables precise vehicle steering using LiDAR sensors that collect environmental data. Deutsche Telekom has combined mobile connectivity with a fiber optic backbone to ensure fast and reliable data transmission, essential for automated vehicle control.
