Deutsche Telekom Clarifies International Mobile Use and Roaming Costs

Deutsche Telekom has provided updated guidance for its customers regarding mobile phone usage abroad, commonly known as roaming. The information details how services function within the European Union and in various international destinations, aiming to prevent unexpected charges for travelers.

Within the EU and EEA

For travel within the European Union, as well as Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Ukraine, and Moldova, Deutsche Telekom customers can use their mobile services under the same conditions as their domestic plan. This means calls, texts, and data usage are covered by their existing tariff without additional roaming fees.

United Kingdom and Switzerland

Deutsche Telekom treats the United Kingdom and Switzerland as EU countries for roaming purposes. This policy applies to current and many older smartphone and prepaid plans. While mobile data in Switzerland is covered, older prepaid plans might incur charges for calls and SMS. Customers are advised to check their specific prepaid plan details before traveling.

Outside the EU

Roaming conditions outside the EU vary by destination and plan. Many current MagentaMobil plans from Deutsche Telekom include an annual data allowance for over 140 countries worldwide, ranging from 2GB to 50GB depending on the plan. The "Travel & Surf" option is also highlighted as a way to manage costs by preventing accidental data usage and allowing customers to purchase specific data passes as needed.

Special Circumstances

The company also notes that roaming on ships and airplanes often utilizes satellite networks, which may have different conditions. Deutsche Telekom maintains agreements with over 600 partner networks globally, ensuring customers have access to the best available network, including 5G in approximately 120 countries.
