Deutsche Telekom completes acquisition of VoiceStream Wireless and Powertel

Deutsche Telekom has finalized the acquisition of U.S.-based VoiceStream Wireless and Powertel, establishing a transatlantic mobile operator utilizing the GSM standard.

1 November 2026

Deutsche Telekom has officially completed its acquisition of VoiceStream Wireless and Powertel, merging the companies into its T-Mobile International subsidiary. This consolidation creates the first wireless operator to offer seamless mobile communications across both European and U.S. markets using a unified GSM platform.

VoiceStream will operate as the North American arm of T-Mobile, based in Bellevue, Washington. The leadership team, including CEO John Stanton, will remain in place to oversee operations that currently span 38 states and serve approximately 5.4 million subscribers. The company’s spectrum licenses now cover 97 percent of the U.S. population.

The strategic focus is on leveraging the widespread adoption of the GSM standard to facilitate international roaming and unified service offerings. Following the acquisition, the company is launching "WorldClass," a roaming service designed to provide a single rate for data and voice communications for travelers between Europe and the United States.

Market analysts note that this acquisition provides Deutsche Telekom with an immediate and significant footprint in the competitive U.S. wireless sector. By utilizing an established digital standard, the firm aims to differentiate itself from domestic competitors that are currently in the process of transitioning their infrastructure.
