Deutsche Telekom Completes Fiber Optic Rollout in Rural Germany

Deutsche Telekom has announced the completion of a major fiber optic network expansion project in the municipalities of Murrhardt, Althütte, Großerlach, and Sulzbach an der Murr.

The project, initiated by the local communities over a decade ago, aimed to bridge the digital divide in the rural Swabian-Franconian Forest. This collaborative effort resulted in the installation of more than 1,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable, including approximately 160 kilometers through trenchless technology. Additionally, 122 new fiber optic network distribution points were established.

The newly deployed network will provide over 4,300 households and businesses, along with 14 schools, with access to internet speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second. The expansion was supported by federal and state funding, totaling approximately 6.6 million euros.

Despite facing technical challenges and unforeseen requirements during its implementation, the project's completion underscores the importance of sustained effort and inter-municipal cooperation. Telekom highlighted that resolving complex infrastructure projects requires perseverance and mutual trust.

This fiber optic rollout is crucial for enhancing the digital infrastructure and economic competitiveness of the Rems-Murr district. Telekom has previously connected over 78,000 households and businesses in the district with fiber optic services, as part of ongoing efforts to achieve widespread broadband coverage.
