Deutsche Telekom deploys hybrid routers to boost home broadband speeds
Deutsche Telekom is utilizing hybrid routing technology to combine fixed-line and mobile network bandwidth, aiming to enhance internet performance where fiber-optic access is unavailable.

Deutsche Telekom has integrated hybrid connectivity features into its hardware lineup, allowing residential customers to bolster existing fixed-line connections with 5G and LTE capacity. By combining DSL or VDSL infrastructure with mobile data streams, the system aims to bypass speed limitations inherent in older copper-based networks.
The hardware setup involves a compatible router, such as the Speedport Smart 4, and a weather-resistant mobile receiver. The system uses a load-balancing mechanism where the fixed-line connection remains the priority, while the mobile network handles peak demand through a process known as "bonding." Data packets are split between the two tunnels and reassembled, theoretically allowing download speeds of up to 500 Mbit/s.
This technology serves as an interim solution as the company continues its long-term fiber-optic rollout, which currently reaches 12 million homes and businesses. While fiber remains the long-term infrastructure goal, hybrid solutions are intended to improve service quality for those currently restricted to traditional copper or vectoring-based connections.
