Deutsche Telekom embeds AI directly into network calls

Deutsche Telekom is integrating artificial intelligence directly into its phone network with the launch of its Magenta AI Call Assistant. This new feature aims to enhance phone conversations by offering real-time support, including live language translation and automatic conversation summaries, directly within the call. The service operates without the need for users to download separate applications or use specialized devices.

Developed in partnership with AI company ElevenLabs, the assistant is activated by saying "Hey Magenta" during a call. It is designed to provide contextual assistance, such as suggesting nearby restaurants or aiding in travel planning. Future capabilities are expected to include automated booking services and form completion.

Deutsche Telekom emphasizes that privacy and user consent are paramount. The AI processing begins only after explicit customer activation, and all participants in the call are informed when the assistant is active, adhering to European data protection standards. Call content is not stored or analyzed without consent.

The Magenta AI Call Assistant will initially be available to Deutsche Telekom customers in Germany. The company plans to expand language support to up to 50 languages within the next 12 months. Deutsche Telekom views this as a step toward becoming an "AI-first" telecommunications provider, making phone calls more valuable and efficient.
