Deutsche Telekom Highlights Digital Ethics and Responsible AI

Telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom is outlining its strategy for advancing digital ethics, focusing on a human-centered approach to technology development. The company aims to ensure that digital technologies support people's quality of life, expand their scope for action, and preserve their autonomy.

A key component of this strategy is the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). Deutsche Telekom was among the first companies worldwide to introduce AI Guidelines for Digital Ethics back in 2018. These guidelines, which hold the same standing as the company's Code of Conduct and are integrated into its Supplier Code of Conduct, are applied across the entire value chain. Data protection and AI are closely linked through the "Privacy by Design" approach.

The company has also established internal governance structures for AI, including steering, technical, and regulatory authorities. To bolster employee trust and accelerate innovation, a manifesto on the use of AI in processing employee data has been adopted. Deutsche Telekom has also joined the European Commission's AI Pact, demonstrating its dedication to responsible AI development.

Furthermore, Deutsche Telekom has developed the "AIICARE Check" tool to assist employees in assessing decisions regarding AI use. This self-assessment covers aspects of information, compliance, accountability, resilience, and empathy, ensuring AI is used ethically and transparently.

Deutsche Telekom actively participates in legislative developments through industry associations at both EU and national levels. The company's objective is to foster the development of ethical frameworks for digital technologies and ensure the preservation of human dignity, freedom, and autonomy in the digital space.
