Deutsche Telekom integrates AI into phone calls
Deutsche Telekom has unveiled the Magenta AI Call Assistant, a service designed to enhance phone conversations by embedding artificial intelligence directly into the network. Presented at the Mobile World Congress, the assistant operates in real-time and does not require users to download specific applications or purchase new hardware.
The assistant offers several functionalities, including live translation capabilities for up to 50 languages, call summarization, and the ability to answer questions during a conversation. This technology was developed in partnership with AI research firm ElevenLabs, with Radisys handling the network integration.
Users can activate the Magenta AI Call Assistant by saying "Hey Magenta" during a call. Potential applications include suggesting restaurants based on user preferences, comparing travel options, and assisting with appointment scheduling. Deutsche Telekom emphasizes privacy, stating that call content is processed only after explicit user activation of the assistant.
The service will initially be available to Telekom customers in Germany, with plans for broader language support and additional features to be rolled out over the next year. The company positions this as a step towards becoming an "AI first Telco," focusing on providing secure and user-friendly AI experiences.
