Deutsche Telekom launches AI-phone at accessible price point

Deutsche Telekom is launching a new AI-powered smartphone designed to bring artificial intelligence capabilities to a wider consumer base. The device integrates the Perplexity AI assistant, intended to help users with everyday tasks ranging from information retrieval to personal organization.

The AI-phone is available starting at €149 in Germany and nine other European countries. Deutsche Telekom stated the pricing aims to democratize access to AI technology, making it available to all users rather than just tech enthusiasts.

The core feature, Perplexity Assistant, can be activated via a dedicated button. It is designed to answer various questions, manage calendar entries, draft emails, perform translations, and assist with travel planning. The assistant can also interface with pre-installed applications for tasks like navigation and video playback.

Alongside the AI-phone, Deutsche Telekom is also releasing new models in its T Phone series, the T Phone 3 and T Tablet 2. Customers purchasing the AI-phone or tablet will receive an 18-month subscription to Perplexity Pro and a 3-month Picsart Pro license. Sustainability features are also highlighted, with the T Tablet 2 incorporating 75% recycled plastic in its back cover.

These devices represent Deutsche Telekom's broader strategy to embed AI services across its product lines. The company also offers access to selected AI tools through its Magenta AI app for all customers, regardless of whether they purchase new hardware.
