Deutsche Telekom launches internal platform to recycle network hardware
Deutsche Telekom has deployed the Telekom Equipment Exchange to allow its national subsidiaries to trade and reuse surplus network gear, aiming to reduce costs and environmental impact.

Deutsche Telekom has introduced the Telekom Equipment Exchange (TEE), a digital marketplace designed to facilitate the internal redistribution of surplus network equipment across its national subsidiaries. The initiative seeks to transition away from traditional disposal or external resale of decommissioned gear, instead prioritizing internal reuse to improve supply chain resilience.
By leveraging existing assets within the group, Deutsche Telekom aims to mitigate risks associated with long lead times for new components and supply chain volatility. According to Group Technology Officer Arash Ashouriha, the platform increases visibility of available inventory, allowing the company to respond more effectively to equipment shortages and emergency repair needs without relying exclusively on procurement.
This shift toward a circular economy model is central to the company’s objective of making nearly all IT and network components circular by 2030. Reusing equipment can result in cost savings of up to 80 percent compared to purchasing new hardware. Furthermore, the company identifies carbon emission reductions as a primary benefit, as the manufacturing phase represents the most significant environmental impact of telecommunications infrastructure.
Implementation challenges remain, including the need to clarify legal and regulatory requirements, cross-border logistics, and maintenance licensing. Deutsche Telekom continues to refine processes for testing and validating the compatibility of used hardware to ensure that repurposed equipment meets operational standards for long-term stability.
