Deutsche Telekom launches network APIs for enhanced digital security

Deutsche Telekom has begun the commercial rollout of new network APIs in Germany, starting with "Number Verify." This tool allows applications to verify a user's mobile identity directly through the carrier network, providing a more secure and streamlined alternative to traditional two-factor authentication via SMS. The service is intended to improve user experience while reducing the success rate of account takeover attempts.

The deployment is part of the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, involving collaboration between major operators including Vodafone and O2 Telefónica. By leveraging a standardized platform provided by Vonage, business customers can access these capabilities to build more secure applications. Future iterations include a "SIM Swap" detection feature, which allows institutions to check if a phone number's associated SIM card has been changed recently—a critical metric for fraud prevention in banking.

Beyond identity verification, the company is experimenting with Web3 wallet integrations via a partnership with Fireblocks to simplify blockchain-based asset management. Additionally, the firm is testing high-bandwidth, low-latency 5G network APIs in partnership with Sony to support professional live-video broadcast production. These steps reflect a broader industry push to make core network functionalities accessible as software tools for developers.
