Deutsche Telekom lowers smartphone costs with new return plan

Deutsche Telekom has launched a "return deal" effective September 10, aiming to make high-quality smartphones more affordable and flexible for customers. The plan involves setting a predetermined residual value for the smartphone at the start of the contract term, which lowers the monthly installment payments.

Customers can choose at the end of the contract period whether to keep the device by paying the agreed-upon final installment, or to return it in "used" condition. If returned in good condition with only normal signs of wear, the final payment is waived. This structure ensures that the total cost remains the same as a traditional installment purchase if the phone is kept, but provides a lower monthly outlay.

Smartphones returned under the program will be inspected and refurbished, including secure data deletion, before being resold. This initiative aligns with Deutsche Telekom's environmental strategy to promote a circular economy and reduce electronic waste. However, severe damage to the device may result in the customer being liable for a portion or the full amount of the final installment.

The "return deal" is designed for consumers seeking premium devices while managing monthly expenses. It offers a flexible approach to smartphone ownership, allowing customers to defer their final purchase decision until the end of their contract term without incurring additional costs if they opt to keep the device.
